As one of the most popular aesthetic procedures available, tummy tuck surgeries consistently land in the top five most requested cosmetic surgeries yearly. However, even though they desire the stunning results a tummy tuck can offer, patients are frequently concerned about what to expect during their recovery and how soon they can return to regular activities. In this blog, we’ll outline an in-depth tummy tuck recovery timeline and share some tips for a smoother, easier tummy tuck recovery.
How Long Is Tummy Tuck Recovery?
After tummy tuck surgery, it typically takes about six to eight weeks to get back to all of your normal activities, including regular exercise. Fortunately, your return to your everyday routine is gradual, so you’ll feel and see improvements regularly.
Factors that often influence how quickly you recover from a tummy tuck include:
- Your overall health: Certain chronic health conditions can affect your immune system, slowing down the healing process and increasing your risk for post-surgical complications
- Your fitness level: If you are physically fit, your body can typically recover from the stress of surgery sooner.
- Your age: Younger tummy tuck patients generally have a stronger immune response and a faster rate of cell turnover, both of which will speed up healing.
- Your nicotine use: Nicotine in any form constricts your blood vessels, which inhibits blood flow and impairs healing.
- Your nutrition and hydration: Eating a balanced, healthy diet and staying well-hydrated during recovery ensures your body gets the nutrients it needs to heal properly.
- The extent of your procedure: While the recovery time after any type of tummy tuck is basically the same, the rate of healing is affected by the kind of tummy tuck you get. Recovery after a mini tummy tuck will likely be easier than recovery after a full or extended tummy tuck.
Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline
First 24-48 Hours After Tummy Tuck Surgery
Depending on what type of tummy tuck surgery you get, it may be an outpatient procedure, or you may stay overnight in the hospital. You will probably have drainage tubes attached to your incisions to remove excess fluid and will have significant swelling and some bruising, but this is normal.
There will be significant discomfort for the first couple of days after your procedure, but this is managed with prescription and over-the-counter pain medication. Your mobility will be limited, and Dr. Morales recommends that you stay bent at the waist for the first three or four days after surgery to avoid pulling on the sutures in your incision.
First Week After Tummy Tuck Surgery
You will need to limit your activity for the first week after your surgery, resting and taking slow, short walks around your home to prevent blood clots and encourage circulation. Significant swelling will still be present, but your discomfort levels will begin to decrease. Remember that rest is doing something—you are actively participating in your recovery.
You will wear a compression garment most of the time to help minimize swelling and support your abdomen, as any sort of muscle engagement may be painful. Continue to be gentle with your incisions, and follow your surgeon’s instructions for wound and drain care.
Weeks Two to Three After Tummy Tuck Surgery
Swelling and discomfort will continue to decrease, and many people can return to work by this point in their recovery. You will have a bit more energy and be able to move around more easily and more often. Your drains are typically removed around this time, and your incisions will be well on their way to healing.
Continue to listen to your body, and wear your compression garment as directed.
Weeks Four to Six After Tummy Tuck Surgery
By this time in your recovery, much of the swelling and nearly all the bruising should be gone. Your incision will be mostly healed and look raised and dark pink or red. Once your incision is completely healed, you can begin scar treatment with silicone scar strips or cream to help reduce its visibility.
You will likely be able to resume some light exercise, though strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and anything involving core strength should still be avoided.
Months Two to Six After Tummy Tuck Surgery
By the second month after your tummy tuck, you should be feeling almost back to normal. Swelling will be present (often lasting up to a year) but very minimal, and your scar will continue to fade. As long as your surgeon clears you, you’ll be able to engage in more strenuous activities, including exercise that strengthens your core.
You should also be able to see your final tummy tuck results six months after surgery, enjoying the appearance of your flatter, smoother abdomen.
Ways to Help Ensure a Smooth Tummy Tuck Recovery
While every type of surgery comes with the risk of side effects and complications, being aware of the factors affecting the healing process can help keep your recovery on track. Other ways to ensure your recovery goes off without a hitch include getting adequate rest, listening to your body, and attending all of your follow-up appointments.
An essential component of a successful recovery is following your surgeon’s post-op instructions to the letter. They’ve developed these instructions through education and experience, so adhering to them will help ensure a smooth recovery free from complications.
