While most people have heard of liposuction, they may not be aware of its many advantages. They may also have incorrect ideas about what liposuction can achieve. In this blog, we discuss what liposuction can and cannot achieve.

What Liposuction Can Do

Reduce Pockets of Excess Fat

Have you done roughly one million crunches in hopes of eliminating the excess fat around your midsection? While crunches are a great way to strengthen your core, they don’t always help slim your tummy. Most fitness professionals will tell you that it is impossible to spot reduce when it comes to losing weight—fat is going to come off where it chooses. However, liposuction is a handy tool for spot reduction, allowing you to fine-tune your physique.

Enhance Other Areas of Your Body

Just like you can’t spot reduce “problem areas,” you also can’t predict where you’ll gain weight. If you’re hoping to increase the size of your breasts or boost your booty, chest presses and squats can help build up the muscles in those areas. But if you want to add volume and shape to your breasts or buttocks, consider fat transfer. Fat transfer uses fat harvested from your body via liposuction and strategically places it in areas that need a bit more oomph. With fat transfer breast augmentation or a Brazilian Butt Lift, you can augment the size of your breasts or butt while reducing the size of your waist or hips to accentuate the enhancement even more.

Permanently Eliminate Fat Cells

Once fat cells are removed using liposuction, they don’t come back to that area. However, that doesn’t mean you can coast from here on out. You will still have fat cells around the target area that will expand if you gain weight, which can negatively affect your liposuction results. Additionally, fat will continue to be deposited in other areas of your body, which can also affect the aesthetic appeal of your results.

What Liposuction Cannot Do

Be Used as a Method of Weight Loss

A common question many people have is, “How much weight can I lose with liposuction?” Liposuction is a fantastic tool for body contouring, but it is not a tool for weight loss. Even if you were to get the most fat removed as safely as possible, it would only equate to about three pounds on the scale. Liposuction is a game of inches, meaning you’ll likely see a significant difference in your appearance, with minimal movement on the scale.

Tighten Significant Loose Skin

One of the things you’ll want to consider when choosing liposuction is the condition of your skin. Age and other factors affect the elasticity of your skin, including how well your skin “bounces back” after the removal of excess fat. In some cases, people who undergo liposuction are left with loose or sagging skin. That being said, some methods of liposuction can help tighten the skin a bit, such as laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) or Smartlipo®. The heat generated from the laser energy helps tighten your skin for a smoother result.

Eliminate Cellulite

Many people are under the mistaken impression that cellulite is caused by obesity. While obesity can be a factor, genetics and hormones actually play a big part in the formation of cellulite. Cellulite is caused by fat pushing through the tight connective tissue fibers that anchor the skin to muscle. When the fat pushes upwards, the fibers push downwards, resulting in a dimpled, uneven surface. Liposuction can get rid of some of the fat associated with cellulite, but it can’t break up the tight fibers that create it.
